Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is a (timed) Wii-exclusive on-rails shooter and shares the same DNA as the previous title, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. The game came supplied with the Wii Zapper controller adapter, allowing players to hold the Wii Remote in a convincing gun-like manner. Unlike the previous game, Capcom acted as Publisher alone, handing over all of development to Cavia.
While the game features as a prequel to Resident Evil 4, it also revisits scenarios from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Code: Veronica / X but in a modernised, fully 3D way. In the game you control various characters from the series at different times. As the game is on-rails, all the player needs to do is aim at the screen and fire at enemies and obstacles, and occasionally gameplay will be interrupted by cutscenes.
The game received mainly positive reviews due to it's fast action and fun gameplay, but also received some average reviews on release, with most critics commenting that the shaky, handheld camera style presentation (which was popular at the time) was a hindrance. Critics also mentioned that the storyline could be unpalpable for anybody new to the franchise.
Additionally, the game later was bundled with Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles in a HD presentation exclusively for the PlayStation 3 (Resident Evil Chronicles HD Collection). The game could either be controlled with a traditional controller or the PlayStation Move. It's interesting to note that the intention was to also port the game to the Xbox 360 but developer Cavia couldn't figure out a way to get the Kinect to work (which would have been a requirement).
It's also worth mentioning that for each release of the game, Japan was the last region to get it which is unusual for a Resident Evil title.
