SUMMARY

  • Yaiba is a manga series by Gosho Aoyama that began serialization in 1988, and is all set to receive an anime remake in April 2024.
  • The Yaiba remake will be helmed by the director of Mob Psycho 100 season 3, leading fans to have high expectations from the series.
  • Ranma 1//2 is one of the most successful remakes of classic anime and its recent success might urge more remakes of vintage series.

Several classic anime have received remakes in the last few years, including Rurouni Kenshin, Shaman King, and Urusei Yatsura. But in terms of success, Ranma 1/2 is the first thing that comes to mind.

After the overwhelmingly positive response from fans, it has encouraged directors to take classic anime more seriously. The result is another remake, and this time of a 1988 manga by Gosho Aoyama, the creator of Detective Conan.

Yaiba is a classic manga series created by Gosho Aoyama, which continued serialization from 1988 to 1993. It was his third series to be serialized, with Chotto Mattete and Magic Kaito being released earlier. It wasn’t until 1994 that he debuted Detective Conan, his most famous work yet.

Yaiba had previously received an anime series called Kenyu Densetsu Yaiba, which aired in 1993, but it’s high time that it received a new take. The story revolves around Yaiba, a boy who knows nothing but how to be a samurai. When he unwittingly finds himself in the city, he realizes that he is a legendary warrior who is meant to fight an evil high schooler. But the most interesting part of the series is Yaiba’s hilarious adventure via which he meets legendary figures from Japanese history. His thick-headedness also leads to various comic situations.

A second remake anime, which will be released in April 2025, is called Yaiba: Samurai Legend and it will be supervised by Gosho Aoyama himself. The anime is being directed by Takahiro Hasui, who is also the director of Mob Psycho 100 Season 3. Another Mob Psycho staff member, Yoshimichi Kaneda, is in charge of character design. All in all, the talented staff members are a good sign that Yaiba (2025) might take off soon after its debut.

Ranma 1/2 is one of the few classic anime remakes that can be called successful. In fact, fans, in general, are of the opinion that the latest series has fixed some of the major problems in the original series. Netflix’s remake has taken the most iconic parts of the series and implemented them well while eliminating the existing issues.

The original Ranma 1/2 anime was infamous for its poor pacing. The show felt like it dragged for multiple seasons just because the manga was still continuing at that point, and it needed time before the anime caught up. Thus, small moments from the source were unnecessarily elongated. The remake quickens the pace since it has the upper hand with already available materials.

The latest series also has a gorgeous animation style that is reminiscent of vintage anime series while keeping in mind modern animation techniques. It has also succeeded in keeping fans engaged with its storytelling and clever character development. If other studios could crack the same formula, classic anime remakes might be the next ‘it’ thing. In fact, WIT Studio has already announced The One Piece, a remake of the original anime.

Ranma 1/2 is available to stream on Netflix, and Mob Psycho 100 is currently streaming on Hulu.
